Nursing Home Vs. Assisted Living Facility
Differences between Assisted Living Facilities and Nursing Homes (Skilled Nursing Facilities)
Two of the main differences between these long-term care options revolve around the medical services provided and the level of staffing and expertise. Residents in a nursing home require around the clock care and monitoring for medical stability and/or safety. Residents typically live with more complex health conditions that require the care of a clinical team of licensed healthcare professionals, including nurses, therapists, physicians, dieticians, and social workers.
By contrast, residents of an assisted living community generally require lighter, more custodial care; such as meal preparation, transportation to shopping centers, and medication reminders. As a result of the differences in resident care needs, assisted livings have fewer hands-on staff and, at times, require residents to hire their own 24-hour caregiver at an additional cost.
Some Tips for Choosing a Nursing Home
- Always visit the facility in-person. It’s helpful to call ahead to schedule a time to meet with an Admissions representative; however, requests for “drop-ins” tours should always be welcomed.
- Take note of your first impressions. Does the facility look clean? How does it smell from the first moment you enter? Does the staff seem friendly? Do the residents you encounter look well-kempt (nails, hair, clean clothing)
- Ask friends or co-workers for their thoughts and experiences. Often the best referral is a “word of mouth” referral. Do you know anyone that has ever needed the services of a local nursing home? What were their experiences?
